Giuseppe Guarneri del
Gesu, Cremona While one may admire the perfection of Stradivari, with Guarneri it is primarily his genius. Although sometimes unfinished in the finer details, when looked upon as a whole his violins are simply stunning. Unfortunately for me, as a violin maker, it is only rarely possible for me to hold such an instrument admiringly in my own two hands, instead of just seeing it in illustrations. Several legends are interwoven with Guarneris life ranging from his being a drunk to him having been in prison. It will never really be known how much of this is true. What motivates me most when trying to copy this Cremonese master is the obvious impetuosity of his work, although I have so far not quite been successful with my attempts. |
